Leylandii hedges
Root barriers for Leyland Cypress hedges
A Leylandii root system reaches roughly as far as the hedge is tall. Plant a 4 m hedge and you've planted a 4 m root system into your neighbour's drive. A boundary root barrier is the cleanest way to stop the dispute before it starts.

Why it matters
Why Leylandii cause more boundary disputes than any other species
Around 55 million Leyland Cypress are planted across UK gardens, the most common hedge species in the country. Roots typically extend a distance equal to the height of the hedge, which means a typical 3 to 4 m hedge has a root system reaching well into the neighbouring property.
The High Hedges Act 2003 covers the canopy. It does not directly address roots crossing into drives, drains or foundations, which is where root barriers come in.
- Around 55 million Leyland Cypress in UK gardens
- Root system roughly equals hedge height in spread
- High Hedges Act 2003 covers canopy disputes; barriers handle the root half
- Unmanaged specimens can reach 35 m and behave like a row of timber trees
Recommended spec
What we install for Leyland Cypress
Material
HDPE root barrier
Depth
600 mm
Thickness
1.5 mm HDPE composite
Jointing
Mechanical lap joint, 100 mm overlap, butyl seal at every joint
Upstand
100 mm above soil level (mandatory for Leylandii to stop runner roots topping the barrier)
Best installed at planting. For existing hedges, the barrier is trenched along the boundary on the affected side, and the hedge canopy is reduced beforehand under any active High Hedges complaint.
Comparison
Leylandii versus other hedge and screen species
| Leylandii | Lime (pleached) | Silver Birch | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Typical use | Privacy hedge | Pleached screen | Specimen tree |
| Root spread vs height | ~1:1 | ~0.6:1 | ~0.8:1 |
| Boundary dispute risk | Very High | Low | Low |
| Drain risk | High | High | Low-Medium |
| Recommended barrier depth | 600 mm | 750 mm | 500 mm |
Leylandii is the only common screening species where a root barrier is justified at planting time, regardless of subsidence concern.
Seasonal pattern
When Leylandii roots advance
Conifer root growth is more even across the year than broadleaves. Spring through autumn sees steady extension, and managed hedges cut hard in summer often respond by pushing roots faster.
High Hedges Act 2003
The High Hedges Act lets a neighbour ask the council to enforce a height reduction on a hedge over 2 m of evergreen species, including Leylandii. It does not cover roots. Where complaints have been made, installing a root barrier alongside any agreed canopy reduction shows good faith and removes future grounds for dispute.
Who should act now
If you're planning a Leylandii hedge, or your neighbour has complained about roots in their drive, install the barrier before the dispute escalates.

FAQ
Can I install a barrier on my neighbour's side of the Leylandii?
Only with their consent. The standard approach is to install on your own side along the boundary, which still stops Leyland Cypress roots crossing onto your land.
Does the barrier need to run the full Leylandii length?
Yes, plus a 1 to 2 m return at each end. Otherwise Leyland Cypress roots simply curve around the end of the barrier.
Will the barrier kill the Leylandii?
No. Leyland Cypress roots in all directions, and a one-sided barrier just redirects new growth so the hedge continues to thrive on its planted side.
